Ethical Poser

My phone rang a few minutes ago. A number out of New York City which I didn’t recognize and didn’t come up on Google. Moments later, I had voicemail. It was a woman thanking someone for “leaving the note on the car” and that they should be able to resolve the situation. She explained some of her schedule, asked to have the call returned, and again gave thanks for the note left on the car. There are three possibilities. Someone left a note on her car with a fake telephone number. Or someone left a note on her car with a telephone number that she then misdialed. Or someone has a rather elaborate set-up for getting me to return a marketing call. So, what’s the proper thing to do?

If you call to let her know the mistake, if it IS somehow a marketing scheme, you can hang up. Otherwise, you’ve done a rather nice deed so she’s not waiting for this person to call her back, thinking they are boneheads for not doing so.
