Tesser, Ma’am! Tesser!

Perhaps one of the most unsettling and indelible scenes of my childhood is the image of countless children, in front of countless neighborhood houses, bouncing balls or jumping rope completely in unison. It’s not a real-life scene, of course, but one written by Madeleine L’Engle, who died yesterday of natural causes.
