If ever you’ve doubted that the news divisions of the broadcast networks are just subsidiaries of the networks’ entertainment divisions, look no further for proof than the latest development regarding the Golden Globes and the writers strike: The awards will be given out in a stripped-down “ceremony” to be broadcast by NBC News.
Addendum: Underscoring the problematic construct of an entertainment program packaged and broadcast by a network’s news division, the WGA has stated that if it becomes clear that this remains an event produced by Dick Clark Productions (a struck company), they will picket the event, regardless of NBC trying to package it as “news”.
